This series of login tiff images present a simple grey
panel on which wise texts from the sage Chuang Tsu
appear. A key to the 31 files by number appears below. The
texts appear in _Chuang Tsu: Inner Chapters_, translated by
Gia-Fu Feng and Jane English (Vintage, 1974; ISBN
0-394-71990-5, still in print). Elegant Chinese
calligraphy, many fine photographs by Jane English, and
altogether a worthwile book. As food for the eyes, these
texts are simple; as food for the mind they are not.

A path is formed by walking on it. (1)
Only at a certain height is there enough air space for a
great wingspan. (2)
Little knowledge is not to be compared with great knowledge,
nor a short life with a long life. (3)
The morning mushroom knows nothing of twilight and dawn, nor
the chrysalis of spring and autumn. (4)
The perfect man has no self, the holy man has no merit, the
sage has no reputation. (5)
Name is only the shadow of reality. (6)
The universe has a cosmic breath. Its name is wind. (7)
Gentle breezes make a small harmony, fierce winds a great
one. (8)
We get involved with our activities and our minds are
distracted. (9)
If there is no other, there is no I. (11)
If one is true to one's self and follows its teaching, who
needs to be without a teacher? (10)
Words are not just blown air. They have a meaning. (12)
The best thing to do is look beyond right and wrong. (13)
One person cannot see things as another sees them. (14)
At the still point in the center of the circle one can see
the infinite in all things. (15)
Nothing is without nature or function. (16)
The sage seeks insight from chaos and doubt. (17)
Life has a limit, but knowledge is without limit. (18)
Be always at one and accept whatever happens. (19)
It is in emptiness that light is born. (20)
There is happiness in stillness. (21)
Exaggeration leads away from truth. (22)
When animals face death, they do not care what noises they
make. (23)
Happiness is light as a feather, yet nobody knows how to
bear it. (24)
Everyone knows the usefulness of the useful, but no one
knows the usefulness of the useless. (25)
Only that which is still in itself can still the seekers of
stillness. (26)
Holding fast to one's own roots is the foundation of
courage. (27)
Day and night, share the springtime with all things, thus
creating the seasons in your own heart. (28)
Because virtue has no outward form, nothing can escape from
it. (29)
When goodness shines forth, the outward appearances are
forgotten. (30)
To consider reason as a guide for action is to be with
others on the path upward. (31)
